Befriending and mentoring - just be yourself

What are befriending and mentoring?

Everyone needs someone - someone to turn to for advice, for inspiration or maybe just for a good old fashioned chat. Befriending and mentoring are, quite simply, about being there for someone. Gaining their trust, talking about their problems, encouraging their ambitions, giving them a sense of self worth. Where mentoring is goal focused, befriending has more of a social emphasis.

Who can do it?

Anyone can do it. All you need is a few hours a month, spending time with someone in need of guidance, or just a bit of company, doing things you both enjoy. There are lots of different opportunities for volunteering as a befriender or mentor and everyone has experiences they can share, which will make a real difference to someone's life.

"My mentoring experience has made me more understanding and given me perspective in my personal and professional life. I've discovered new sides to myself. I had to learn to see the world from their point of view and understand their challenges, which was a very enriching and valuable experience."

"Sam didn't judge me. I would tell her something and she wouldn't be biased, she would think about it and then say what she thought. It was easier to talk to Sam than to my mum. I can't tell my mum anything because some things would upset her or make her angry. Thank you for everything. I could still be drinking and in a mess if it weren't for the help I got from Sam. I think about it sometimes and it could have been real bad."
