The Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF) is the national strategic body for mentoring and befriending, offering support to practitioners and organisations throughout the sector. It aims to:

• Provide leadership for the mentoring and befriending movement
• Encourage organisations to use mentoring and befriending
• Provide capacity building support to programmes through a national and regional body infrastructure
• Promote quality and standards in training
• Develop and share best practice in mentoring and befriending

Volunteering England (VE) works across the voluntary, public and private sectors to raise the profile of volunteering as a powerful force for change, both for those who volunteer and for the wider community. Key activities undertaken by Volunteering England include:

• Supporting an England-wide network of volunteer development agencies, promoting and enabling volunteering and community involvement
• Providing grants, support and advice to sustain and develop volunteering
• Keeping volunteering high on the policy agenda and working with government to promote opportunities for, and remove institutional barriers to, volunteering
• Providing authoritative, up-to-date research on volunteering issues

March 2005 saw the launch of the Mentoring and Befriending Development Project – a joint venture between VE and MBF, which aims to ensure that MBF adds value to the voluntary and community sector. A large portion of the work will focus on building strong links within volunteering infrastructure, in particular with Volunteer Centres.
